Picky Mrs. Pickle

We read the book Picky Mrs. Pickle to the class. Our lesson was to help students understand that authors write stories for many purposes. In this story the author wrote to teach a very valuable lesson: you should be brave and always try something new.
After the read aloud and discussion, the students were asked to try a bread and butter pickle.  These pictures capture how fun this moment was.  We can't believe everyone tried it. : )

Finally, we collected data from the students and organized it. We used tally marks to represent each student.
As little scientists and mathematicians, we wonder how the data would change if we were to taste dill pickles instead of the bread and butter kind.

Fantastic First Week

We were so excited to see you all at Orientation!  Thank you for taking the time to come meet us and show your little ones the classroom for the first time.

Our first week was a whirlwind. It flew by so quickly but we got a lot accomplished and made a lot of memories with our new friends. Monday started with a WOW experience for the children (okay...the faculty were WOWED too)!  Your second graders were able to see a hot air balloon inflate and lift off with our very own Mrs. Phillips in it, along with other friends.

Each year we begin with rituals and routines of the classroom. This year your kiddos are pros and are so accustomed to Math, Reading and Writing Workshop that this has been an easy transition for them. We are so excited to dig deeper into the standards next week. They are already great readers, writers, and mathematicians.

We began Science by completing two lab explorations using their five senses to make observations. Ask your child about these two labs!

We also kicked off our Fund Run fundraiser!  The kids were so excited to attend the assembly where all the Fund Runners pumped up the students to get sponsors!
